Tragedy of the Faithful „Danmark“

SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 24 Danmark
A Soviet Red Army soldier being photographed next to an unidentified fallen SS-Hauptsturmführer of the SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 24 Danmark in the heart of Berlin (corner of Chausseestraße and Oranienburger Straße) on May 1 1945. For some reason the Dane had been armed with a Fallschirmjägergewehr FG-42 (paratrooper automatic rifle 42) and used a paratrooper helmet. The Danish flag insignia under the SS arm eagle is clearly shown (in a close-up lighter version of this image). Pinned to his uniform is also the Iron Cross 1st Class. 2. Hermann Lührs sounds very german, only the Danes that volunteered to Freikorps Dänemark in 1941 received this Danish flag insignia.
